 🌿 Our Story

A Midwife’s Mission Becomes a Movement
Stacy Lewis Carruth, CPM, began her midwifery career in 1992. Over the past three decades, she has served as both a midwife and director at two licensed birth centers. While attending hundreds of births, she gained extensive experience in both clinical care and healthcare administration—including the complex world of insurance reimbursement.

Through this work, Stacy observed a discrepancy: families receiving maternity care from licensed midwives often faced denied or delayed insurance payments, while those receiving care from licensed physicians had their claims processed without issue. Despite both professions being licensed healthcare providers, midwifery care was not reimbursed fairly.

Determined to change this, Stacy committed herself to finding a way for health insurance to cover out-of-hospital births. As a mother of nine, she was no stranger to perseverance—and she brought that same determination to this cause.

What began with a humble mission has grown into a powerful movement with real, measurable results.

 ⚖️ The Turning Point
In 2009, Stacy met a groundbreaking attorney who had won over $300 million in settlements for out-of-network healthcare providers. His legal victories helped physicians escape low-paying insurance contracts and led to the founding of Edge Medical Solutions, Inc.. Stacy became the first midwife to join Edge—and the results were immediate.  Claims for her birth clients were finally being paid fairly.

👶 National Birth Centers, Inc. Is Born
Soon after, they co-founded National Birth Centers, Inc. to focus exclusively on billing for midwives and out-of-hospital facilities. Under this model, midwives became contracted providers with National Birth Centers, and claims were submitted under the company’s existing payer agreements. This innovative structure gives midwives the leverage they need to get reimbursed for their care.

 💼 Today: Midwives Advantage
Eventually, Stacy became the sole owner of the business. She expanded its reach and refined its processes to better serve midwives nationwide. That growth became Midwives Advantage. Today, midwives and birth centers in 38 states benefit from this work.  Our mission is simple: Help midwives get paid fairly by insurance companies, so families can choose the birth experience that suits them best.
Midwives Advantage is a movement for fairness, built by a midwife, backed by experience.
